Cardio Exercise: HIIT vs. LISS - Which Form is Most Effective?
There are two different approaches to cardio exercises – HIIT and LISS. What do these two stand for?

  • HIIT: High-Intensity Interval Training – involves short bursts with high effort, followed by lower effort rest intervals
  • LISS: Low-Intensity Steady State – consistent effort at a steady pace for an allotted amount of time at a slightly increased heart rate

Both of these approaches have their own benefits, as everybody reacts differently and has limits as to what they can do. Whether you choose to do HIIT or LISS, getting that exercise into your day is nonetheless a great choice to make.

Research shows that LISS forces the body to use fat as its main source of fuel for the workout, whereas the intensity of HIIT will use glycogen or carbohydrates as its main source of fuel. However, when the session is over, the amount of calories being burned is around the same.

However, since they use different fuel sources and the way you push your body is different, are there other benefits that either of these approaches can have over another? Learn more about the science in the video below!
